My Approach

Lynn PearlI am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Certified Group Psychotherapist (CGP), practicing on the Upper West Side of New York City. My approach to therapy is based on a careful and comprehensive assessment of you and your particular needs. When you come to me for help, I will use my years of experience, my knowledge, and range of therapeutic tools, to determine the best way for us to work together. I will engage with you actively, providing questions, comments and feedback as needed, in order to facilitate and guide your work in therapy.

I specialize in working with couples and am also skilled in working with individuals in both brief and longer-term individual psychotherapy. Brief therapy (which typically lasts 3 to 6 months) is most useful for people dealing with a temporary crisis or an adjustment to a major life change. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is a specific form of brief therapy which can be very helpful for those who seek to alter a specific behavior or pattern of thought. Other life problems such as anxiety, depression, and relationship or work-related dilemmas, may require an insight-oriented approach, which is typically of longer duration. I often combine cognitive and insight-oriented psychotherapy in working with individuals for whom this is appropriate.

I believe that the relationship we develop in my office represents a microcosm of the ones that you have with your family, friends and colleagues. As such, our work together will provide you with an opportunity to expand your understanding of yourself, your relationships, your world, and the people who are important to you within it.

There's no single approach that works for everyone. I look forward to meeting you and, in getting to know you, discover how best to help you with the concerns that bring you to my office. Respect, mutuality, compassion and, of course, confidentiality are the cornerstones of my practice.
